If there is one thing that is shaping and driving digital change, it is logistics. Within this economic sector, too, unimaginably much has happened in recent years. What is the dynamic behind it? What innovations are promising? What else is happening in the world of logistics and how is it developing in the future? This is one of the topics at the German Logistics Congress 2019 in Berlin, which will take place from 23 to 25 October. As Fulfillment service provider we are of course here to give us a personal impression and to talk about it with many other participants of the congress.
For the ninth time in a row, the logistics industry can report stable growth of two percent at the end of 2019. This corresponds to a turnover of 279 billion euros (after 274 billion euros in 2018), while slightly more than 3.2 million people were still employed by logistics service providers and in the logistics functions of industry and trade. 2020 is also expected to be another year of growth at the same level. We can confirm this upward trend from our own experience and have also done a great deal within bergler industrieservices to keep up with this growth and progress - both technologically and in terms of infrastructure and personnel.
"Courage pays"
But if we think of the saying "trees don't grow into the sky", then of course we also know that we can never always go uphill. The motto of the congress, "Courage is worth it", also stated that no pessimism should be allowed to prevail. Nevertheless, there were a few more cautious voices here and there in the discussions at the Logistics Congress 2019. Robert Blackburn, Chairman of the Board of the German Logistics Association (BVL), said in his opening speech: "To stimulate the economy, central banks lowered interest rates earlier. In view of the zero interest rate phase, this is not possible at present and this is cause for concern".
In addition, one sees risks for the logistics sector in global economic uncertainties. Good political conditions are undoubtedly important and it is also in everyone's interest if unresolved trade conflicts are resolved or not even arise in the future. We can therefore only endorse BVL CEO Blackburn's statement that success depends on courage and is a good remedy against self-fulfilling prophecies. Great opportunities for logistics also arise above all in the area of digital change - where it can certainly become the driving force.
Of course, we are not only at the German Logistics Congress 2019 to exchange ideas with other companies in the industry or to speculate on the future of the logistics world, but also to enjoy the here and now. Yesterday's gala evening with all sorts of culinary delights, great show acts and a casual get-together offered plenty of opportunities for this - a big compliment to the organisers and doers behind the German Logistics Congress, who made it a truly top-class event.
