What is a mesh pallet?

The mesh pallet is a standardized loading aid. It is primarily used for the transport and storage of small, irregularly shaped, or pressure-sensitive goods. It combines the sturdy base structure of a flat pallet with a protective frame made of steel mesh panels.

Design and Technical Features

A standard mesh box has the same basic dimensions (1,200 x 800 mm) as a Euro pallet. This makes it compatible with standard shelving systems and transport equipment.

  • The frame consists of a sturdy steel construction, ensuring stability. The side walls are fitted with wire mesh, which secures the contents while allowing for visual inspection of the goods.
  • A standard mesh box can carry loads of up to 1,500 kg. Since its feet are designed to securely engage with the upper frame of another box, mesh boxes can be stacked to save space.
  • Accessibility: Typically, one of the long sides has two flaps. The upper flap opens downward and the lower flap opens upward, allowing goods to be easily removed even when stacked.

Applications in Logistics

Mesh containers are used wherever loose goods need to be transported safely without the need for additional outer packaging, such as cardboard boxes.

  • In production, they are often used as collection bins for components or waste directly on the production line.
  • Due to their standardized dimensions and high dimensional stability, they are also ideal for use in automated warehouse systems and for transport via automated guided vehicles (AGVs).
  • Protection: Unlike open wooden pallets, mesh boxes provide physical protection against items falling out and protect sensitive goods from damage caused by stacking pressure.

The Exchange System

Like the Euro flat pallet, the mesh box is part of the European pallet pool. It is a reusable loading aid that can be exchanged between suppliers, freight forwarders, and recipients. To ensure quality within the pool, the boxes must meet certain standards (such as UIC Standard 435-3). These are inspected on a regular basis.
