Inbound logistics

Inbound logistics refers to all activities necessary to transport raw materials, components, or finished products from the supplier to the company, receive them, store them, and make them available for production or sale.

The main tasks of inbound logistics include:

  • Procurement and purchasing: Selecting and negotiating contracts with suppliers, ordering goods and materials.
  • Transport management: Organizing transport from the supplier to the company, taking into account costs, time, and quality.
  • Goods receipt inspection: Checking the delivered goods for quantity, quality, and conformity with the order documents.
  • Storage and inventory management: Storing the goods in suitable storage locations and continuously monitoring inventory levels.
  • Handling and distribution: Preparing the goods for further processing or sale, including picking and packaging.

Importance of inbound logistics

Efficient inbound logistics are crucial to a company's competitiveness. They ensure that the required materials are available in the right quantities at the right time and in the right place. By optimizing the planning and implementation of inbound logistics, companies can reduce their costs, lower their inventory levels, and make their production processes run more smoothly.

Connection to other areas of logistics

Inbound logistics is closely linked to outbound logistics (distribution of finished products to customers) and reverse logistics (return of goods, for example in the case of returns). Close integration of these areas is necessary to ensure an efficient and cost-effective supply chain.
