Zero-error picking

Zero-error picking is both a logistical goal and a quality standard within picking processes. The aim is to assemble all items in a customer order completely, correctly, and on time, without making any mistakes.

What does “zero error” mean?

Errors in picking lead to incorrect deliveries, complaints, increased returns, and ultimately customer dissatisfaction. The zero-error strategy therefore focuses on consistent error prevention rather than subsequent error correction, i.e., on prevention rather than reaction.

Measures for error prevention

Various organizational and technological tools are used to achieve zero-error picking. These include, among others:

  • IT-supported warehouse management systems (WMS) that digitally support and control each work step
  • Pick-by-light, pick-by-voice, or pick-by-vision systems that provide visual or acoustic instructions
  • Barcode and RFID scanning for unique identification of items
  • Automated inspection mechanisms such as weight checks or multiple scans before shipping
  • Employee training and clear process guidelines to raise awareness of quality

Advantages of zero-error picking

  • Increased customer satisfaction through correct and punctual deliveries
  • Cost reduction through fewer returns, complaints, and rework
  • Higher process efficiency through clearly structured and digital workflows
  • Stronger customer loyalty through reliable service quality

Limitations and challenges

Implementing zero-error picking is challenging. In addition to the use of modern technologies, it requires continuous process optimization and a strong awareness of quality among all employees. Technical systems alone are not enough—they must be integrated sensibly and supplemented by human attention.
