General cargo

General cargo refers to goods that can be stored and transported as a single unit. These goods must remain stable and unchanged in form during transport. Typical examples include machinery, furniture, and building materials. Liquid and gaseous substances as well as bulk goods such as sand or coal are not considered general cargo.

Packaging

The packaging of general cargo is important to protect it from damage and enable easy handling. Common packaging materials are wood, metal, and plastic. In addition, labeling plays an important role in providing information about the contents and handling instructions.

Storage

General cargo is grouped into loading units to make efficient use of storage and transport space. The general cargo is placed in or on aids such as pallets and mesh boxes. This allows for better organization and securing of the goods during transport.

Warehouses are often specially equipped to meet the different requirements of piece goods. Modern technologies and management systems help to keep track of stock levels and the flow of goods.

Transport

General cargo is often bundled on pallets or in mesh boxes to facilitate transport. The weight limit for general cargo is usually up to 3000 kg, but may vary depending on the means of transport. Transport is usually by truck, plane, ship, or rail. Containers are used for this purpose.
