Cantilever rack

A cantilever rack, also known as a cantilever storage rack, is a special type of storage system for long, bulky, or unwieldy goods. The basic structure consists of vertical uprights to which horizontal cantilever arms are attached. The stored goods are placed on these arms. This design allows free access from the front, making it easy to store and retrieve large or long materials such as pipes, beams, wooden panels, or profiles. Compared to classic racking systems, there is no fixed storage space restriction per level, which means that the warehouse can be used flexibly.

Functionality

Storage and retrieval in cantilever racking is usually carried out using forklifts or cranes, or manually in the case of smaller goods. The cantilever arms can be arranged on one or both sides. Double-sided systems are particularly space-saving, as they use both sides of an aisle for storage. Due to the open design, orientation in the warehouse is very easy and even particularly long goods can be stored without having to be moved.

Areas of application

Cantilever racking is mainly used where long, stable materials need to be stored. Typical industries are wood processing, metal trading, the steel industry, building materials trading, and mechanical engineering. They are particularly useful for non-standardized materials or those with different lengths, as the racks can be flexibly adjusted.

Advantages and special features

The biggest advantage of cantilever racking is its high flexibility and accessibility. Long and bulky goods are easy to handle and the open structure allows a quick overview of the stock. In addition, the storage areas can be designed to save space, especially with double-sided cantilever racks.

Nevertheless, there are also limitations. Storage on cantilever systems requires stable standing surfaces and precise operation to avoid damage. In addition, this type of storage is less suitable for small, loose, or sensitive goods, which are better protected in other racking systems.
