A shelf storage system is specially designed for storing small parts, tools, and sensitive goods. The goods are stored on flat, stable supports known as shelves. These can have different dimensions and load capacities depending on the size of the system and its load capacity. Shelf storage systems are used in particular in intralogistics, production, and distribution centers to ensure space-saving and efficient storage.

Shelf storage systems are available in various designs with different degrees of automation:

  1. In manual shelf storage systems, employees place the shelves on the racks by hand and remove them as needed. Simple conveyor or lifting systems can be used to assist with this.
  2. Partially or fully automated tray storage systems: Here, storage and retrieval machines, shuttles, or lift systems take care of storing and retrieving the trays. This variant enables faster and more accurate order picking, especially with high turnover rates.

Advantages of shelf storage systems

Depending on the design, a shelf storage system offers a number of advantages:

  • Clear and structured storage of small parts
  • High space utilization thanks to compact design
  • Flexible application options from manual to fully automated
  • Optimized picking processes with automatic systems
  • Protection of sensitive goods thanks to stable loading units
