Block storage is a particularly simple and cost-effective form of storage in which goods are stacked directly on the floor without the use of racking systems. This type of storage is mainly used for stackable goods such as pallets, crates, beverage cartons, or tires. The goods are stored in blocks next to and on top of each other, allowing the available space to be used particularly efficiently. Since no shelving systems are required, the investment and operating costs are significantly lower compared to other types of storage.
A key advantage of block storage is its simple structure and flexibility. It can be quickly adapted to changes in goods quantities or product types, as there are no fixed storage locations or complex racking structures. In addition, the compact stacking of goods enables very space-saving storage, which is why it is particularly suitable for large, homogeneous inventories. Block storage is often used in the food, beverage, and building materials industries, where products are transported and stored in similar packaging units.
Despite its advantages, block storage also has some limitations. For example, direct access to individual goods is often difficult, as pallets at the front must be removed in order to reach products stored further back. This makes the system particularly suitable for products that are moved in large quantities and where the order of access (e.g., “last in, first out”) is not a decisive factor. Inventory control is also somewhat more complex, as there is no clear storage location assignment and regular visual inspections may be necessary.
