What is an overnight courier?

An overnight courier, also known as a night courier, is a delivery service that specialises in the delivery of consignments within 24 hours. This service can be offered by public postal services or private companies and guarantees delivery of the consignment on the next working day.

Features and specialities
As a rule, overnight courier services are collective deliveries in which various consignments are transported together. This enables efficient route planning and cost optimisation for the courier service. It should be noted that the consignments can be reloaded several times, which involves different interfaces and handling points.

To protect consignments against possible damage and loss, customers are often advised to take out insurance for their consignment. In contrast to other delivery services, customers of overnight courier services often have no way of tracking the current location and condition of their consignment during transport.

Fee structure
The charges for an overnight courier service are generally based on the weight of the consignment and the selected delivery time. Unlike some other delivery services, the fee is not based on the distance the consignment has travelled. Customers can choose between different delivery times the next day: 9 am, 10 am, 12 pm or 5 pm. Earlier delivery times and heavier consignments result in higher costs.

Reliability
Overnight courier services generally have an impressive track record, with almost 99% of parcels delivered on time. Freight is transported exclusively by road. Poor weather or traffic conditions can occasionally lead to delays. Customers should be aware of these potential challenges, even though service providers endeavour to ensure efficient and punctual delivery.
