Transport exchange: What is it?

Transport exchanges, also known as freight exchanges or load space exchanges, are digital platforms on which both free load space and available freight are offered. This online service is used by transport companies, logistics service providers and freight forwarders to coordinate supply and demand. The players use the platform to search for suitable freight offers or free loading space in order to optimally utilise their transport capacities.

How do transport exchanges work?

Transport exchanges provide the following information for each order:

  • Available or required loading space capacity
  • Type of goods
  • Start and destination point of the route
  • Transport date
  • Price offered

The latter are transparent market prices that create a win-win situation for the contractor and the client.

Freight forwarders can search the databases for available loads and enter their own vehicle and loading space capacities. In addition, transport exchanges offer logistics service providers and freight forwarders the opportunity to offer their transport services and compare them with the available capacities.

The platforms serve as an interface for transmitting freight information to other companies in the transport industry. The integration of telematics and transport management systems can further increase efficiency by allowing freight to be adjusted in real time using GPS.

Some exchanges offer direct interfaces for data transfer between transport companies and the platform. In this way, supply and demand can be exchanged in real time. At the same time, up-to-date information is always guaranteed.
