Batch picking

Batch picking or multi-order picking

Batch means order stack and refers to the grouping of several orders which are then divided again according to individual articles.

In the context of logistics, the term batch is used above all in relation to order picking, when orders are combined in a collected picking tour in the goods issue warehouse. Here, the focus is on the execution of two stages:

  1. consolidation of the orders or creation of the batch
  2. consolidation by order

In practical terms, this means that an order picker takes large quantities of an item from the shelf and then assigns them to the respective picking orders on packing tables. On the one hand, this results in the saving of walking distances and, at the same time, in the saving of time resources.

In principle, batch picking is mainly used in the fashion and food industry as well as in the e-commerce and non-food segments.
