What is information logistics?

Modern corporate structures without information logistics? Hardly imaginable. Information logistics deals with the efficient processing, storage and transfer of information within and between organizations. Similar to physical logistics, which is responsible for transportation, information logistics takes care of the smooth flow of data and information.

How does information logistics work?

Several key processes ensure the optimal handling of information:

  1. data acquisition
Before data can be analyzed, it must first be collected. This can be done manually by employees or automatically with the help of sensors and software.

  2. data processing and analysis
This step involves converting the collected data into usable information. Specialized software solutions and algorithms are often used here.

  3. storage and management
What is the top priority when it comes to data? Protecting it from unauthorized access and at the same time enabling authorized persons to access it easily. To ensure this, databases and specialized information management systems are used.

  4. communication and dissemination
The best information is of no value if it does not reach the right people. E-mails, databases or specialized software applications ensure that information ends up in the right place.

5 Security and data protection
Another key aspect of information logistics is ensuring the security and privacy of sensitive information. Security protocols and access restrictions are crucial here.

Advantages and disadvantages of information logistics

Advantages:

  • Higher productivity: Well-designed information logistics can automate and accelerate processes.

  • Better decision-making: Well-organized and prepared information helps managers to make decisions based on data.

  • Improved communication: Clear communication channels and well-structured information promote collaboration and the exchange of information within a company.

Disadvantages:

  • Investment costs: The introduction and maintenance of information logistics systems can be costly.

  • Data security and privacy risks: Improper handling of information can lead to security breaches and data breaches.

  • Complexity: The implementation and management of information logistics requires a certain level of expertise. This can be a major challenge, especially in complex companies.

Forms of information logistics

There are various forms of information logistics, which differ depending on the requirements and objectives of a company.

Here are some examples:

  1. supply chain management (SCM)
SCM focuses on the optimization of information flows along the entire supply chain of a company, from procurement to delivery to the end customer.

  2. customer relationship management (CRM)
Handwritten lists, Excel sheets or pieces of paper - all these systems have one thing in common: sooner rather than later, important customer data is lost. To prevent this, companies are turning to CRM systems. What was the customer's telephone number again? What was the content of the last email? The CRM system will tell you in no time at all.

  3. enterprise resource planning (ERP)
ERP systems are the ultimate booster when it comes to company management. The ERP system bundles the various areas of a company in one software. From administration to production, everyone has access to the same data pool.

  4. knowledge management
Knowledge management aims to collect, organize and share knowledge within a company in order to increase the ability to innovate.
